ARIZONA HALL OF FAME VINTAGE CLASSIC
by Windy McDonald
Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria Arizona and the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame have joined forces to stage the 11th running of the Hall of Fame Vintage Classic and will also have the induction ceremonies for the 2010 inductees into the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame. The race, scheduled for October 23rd, will feature the American Sprint Car Series, non winged Modified Midgets and Desert Dwarf Cars.
The induction ceremonies will take place during intermission just before the main event for Vintage Cars from throughout the Southwest. The cars, some built and raced in the thirties will basically put on exhibition races since the cars do not have the necessary safety features of today’s racers.
The Vintage cars will also be present Friday night when the Southwest Region American Sprint Car Series and their winged sprinters headline the show. The winged Modified Midgets and the Dwarf Cars will also be on the card.
Several of the Vintage cars will be on display on the main concourse each night.
The winged sprints will be headed by Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, NM. However Ziehl hold a scant 35 point lead over Arizona’s John Gaston as of this writing. The winged sprints have six races before they visit Canyon for only the second time this year. Former World of Outlaws star Johnny Herrera won the May 22nd feature at Canyon.
Ziehl has scored two feature wins and so has Herrera. Other winners have been Gaston, Joshua Hodges, Joshua Williams and Canyon’s own Dalten Gabbard.
Charles Davis, Jr. of Buckeye, AZ heads the points standings in the Discount Tire Canyon Region American Sprint Car Series. Davis, a three time Arizona Sprint Car champion has a commanding 146 point lead over Jeremy Sherman who is trying for a fifth straight driving title. Mike
Martin is ten points behind Sherman and R.J. Johnson is another 30 back. Davis has won four of the nine races run this year with one of his wins coming at Canyon. He is the only driver with more than one win. Others have been Dave Darland, one of only five drivers to score championships in all three of USAC main divisions, Sherman, Martin and Johnson.
The non winged guys have been idle for six weeks and will go back to work with the annual Hank Arnold Memorial which runs two nights on Labor Day Weekend.
CURRENT POINTS UPDATE - SUMMER STRETCH IN FULL SWING & NEXT UP AT CANYON SPEEDWAY PARK!
CSP Press Release - Peoria, AZ - August 08, 2010 --- The IMCA Modified division roster boasts an extremely competitive field this season. With side-by-side racing, circuit-after-circuit, the racing has been awesome. Point’s leader 4tw-Tim Ward from Mesa, AZ leads the way after accumulating 358 track points. The lively competitor resting in second place with 344 points is made up of 18-Terry Belcher Jr. and his team is in striking distance of Ward. Past champion 09-Jay Foster should not be overlooked as he is in third with 335 points. Consistent finishes have netted 12-Guy Norton 324 points and X04-Mike Strobel rides in the top five with 307 points.
New modified driver TC-Taylon Center (292) and 76-Scott Smith (284) are in a stout battle for the prestigious “Rookie-Of-The-Year” title. Nothing comes easy as Center and Smith shoot it out in battle every race. Although Center leads the CSP point standings, Smith currently leads the IMCA Western Region and State R.O.Y. standings.
Heavy weight contender 44-Jason Noll (278) has seen his fair share of mechanical issues but holds a stake down in eighth place. Nolls season started with success and he looks to return to form with hopes that all of his mechanical woes are in the past. IMCA state points leader 16-DJ Wood (275) runs ninth at CSP. Wood has been strong on the track but numerous motor failures have sidelined him. Meanwhile 34dd-Bill Carron (264) continues to run in the top ten. Carron’s strategy of staying out of trouble and taking advantage of what is given to him seems to be paying off.
Super Stock “King” and reigning champion 19-Kenny Gill is out front with 443 points. Second generation driver 02x-Larry Brigner (397) is in pursuit as the fall race season quickly approaches. Female racer 17-Lisa Smeltzer (347) has claim on the third spot but not without a battle from a fast 85-Rob Colclasure(331) and savvy 57-Joe Sargenger (326).
In pursuit of his first Pure Stock championship 33y-David Jones has not quite sealed the deal. Jones leads the way with 688 points but strategy will play a huge roll in the Jones teams ability to pull this deal off. Jones’ humble personality, stable crew and fan support are all in line as team 33y make their year end run. Resilience seems to be paying off for the “BIG SHOW” 21-Scott Gunn (600) riding second in points. Gunn has had his fair share of demons this season but as of late, Gunn seems to have the program in cruise control and is patiently waiting for his chance at victory.
Other Pure stock teams enjoying the fruits if their labor includes the “GREEN MACHINE” 47-Darren Olney (586). Olney may be a quiet racer that respects other teams but his driving ability is loud. Olney is currently in third, is consistently up front and eagerly awaits his return to winner’s lane. The winning ways of 01-Ty Warner (570) keep him in the action at fourth. Warner has had numerous hard charger recognitions this season. Rounding out the top five is “Dr. Speed” 28-Jim Skaggs (522). Skaggs has been racing double duty all season making his run that much more challenging.
Bomber Mania fans have seen 28-Jim Skaggs win eight of eleven main events this season. Skagg’s holds onto over one hundred point edge with 763 points. Bomber Maniacs have seen only 64-Daniel Romero with more then one victory this season. Second place 68v-Joe Vlasity (651) has challenged the lead numerous times and is sure to visit the winner’s circle.
The “TANK” 99-Trenton Setelin (636) has proven that with age a driver does gain experience. In his second season in the Bombers, Tank has yet to win a main event but the sixteen year old can see the light. Front-runner “NOTSO” 74x/96-Ron Neis (550) debuted a new ride this season and Neis continues to work the bugs out with an impressive fourth place run in points. The last race winner 40-Grant Ballard (520) in his all pinked out ride looks to get a streak going and improve his fifth place position.
Season two in the IMCA Southern Sportmod division see’s point leader 5-James Webster (187) out front and hot off a main event victory. Webster has a six-point lead with only a double header on Labor Day weekend and the final point race of the season September 25th left to go. With only these three races left, generational racer $-Cody Center (181) looks for his first championship. Sitting third in points and only nine-points out of first father 0-Darin Center (178) could spoil his son’s wishes, as he has Webster on the radar in search of his own championship. In the tightest point race at the track, the southern sportmod division field includes fourth place 7k-Lupe Gomez (172) who is only fifteen-points off the leader and fifth place c11-Chris Caldwell (161) only twenty-six points out.
Aside of the great racing action, the CSP staff will continue with this seasons “Focus On Family” with FREE children give-a-ways featuring BACK-TO-SCHOOL backpack’s filled with school supplies. All Children twelve and under will receive a free drawing ticket upon entry at the front gate to participate in the drawing.

MONSOON MADNESS THEN FULL MOON RACE ACTION AT CANYON SATURDAY 7-24-10
“Thornton” Finishes Atop Modified Madness – “Wrightsman” Dominated Pure Stock Show – “Ballard” Hits Home Run In Pink Bomber – “Webster” Sportmod Stud Starts Last Finishes First – “Fronsman” Outshines Super Stock Field.
CSP Press Release Peoria, AZ July 24, 2010 --- Wow! What a night at the track… With lightning to the northeast and a black cloud overhead, an Arizona monsoon threatened the program as competitors arrived. The storm did cooperate by moving on however a full moon lurked over the oval and a full moon of racing it was!!!!
A full field of twenty-four IMCA Modified teams filled the venue but only twenty-one started the main event. On the green flag of the feature race a nine-car pile up quickly brought a red flag. JD Towing hauled off 40-Jeff Stafford and TC-Taylon Center as their teams were sidelined for the night. The trio of 16w-DJ Wood, 44-Jason Noll and 41-George Fronsman went to the pits forfeiting their starting position as track rules require a car to tag the field after pitting.
With the early race madness cleared, the twenty-five-lap feature did not disappoint a grandstand full of spectators. Generation-X drivers proved racing is in their blood as these second generation racers swapped the lead finishing one-two-three. Seventeen year old late model sensation Ricky Thornton Jr. in his number 20rt modified got up front early with sixteen year old state champion, current points leader a.k.a. the Mesa Missile 4tw-Tim Ward in pursuit. “Bad Boy” 18-Terry Belcher Jr. made his move into third. The trio continued to swap positions putting on a driving exhibition as fans stood cheering.
Meanwhile the veteran teams of 12-Norton, x04-Stroble, 5x-Hemphill, 44-Noll, 14j-Foster, 96-Cox and 41-Fonsman found their way through the field as they swapped positions and raced side-by-side. With ten cars two and three wide the race was in frenzy. Down to the last ten laps, Belcher and Thornton swapped lead exchanges as Ward eyed his chance and stayed on their bumpers. In one of the best modified shows of the year, a good run out of turn four helped 20rt-Ricky Thornton Jr. cross the dual checkers first, 18-Belcher Jr. second, 4tw-Ward third, fourth 12-Norton and fifth 09-Foster.
An outstanding field of twenty-nine Pure Stock teams saw action. Their feature race mimicked the start of the modified main event as they too saw an early pile up that brought out a red flag and parked the teams of 23-McCurdy, 62x-Parmely, 5x-Brigner followed by 45-Roth. Point leader 33y-David Jones then got caught up in a tangle sending him to the back. With 01-Ty Warner alongside 21-Scott Gunn in the back with Jones, 06-Marlowe Wrightsman fended off the young hot shoe 17x-Tyler Mecl. As the race progressed, Wrightsman continued to hold the top spot as a nineteenth starting 01-Ty Warner made every attempt to run him down but simply ran out of time. Warner finished second after the spectacular hard charging performance. Mecl finished with a solid third place run as 44-Steve Shoemaker filled in the four spot and 21-Scott Gunn rounded out the top five.
Bomber-Mania continues to field solid car counts as all eyes were on point’s leader 28-Jim Skaggs in the feature race. Earning the pole position in the twenty lap main event, 40-Grant Ballard took advantage of his starting spot and jumped out front. In chase of the leader 68v-Joe Vlasity was heavy on the throttle. As the race wound down to the last lap, Vlasity ran into problems leaving room for 99-Trenton Setelin and Skaggs to reel him in. Ballard in his all pink bomber flexed his muscle using lapped cars as picks to nail down his first feature win of the season in a bomber. With Skagg’s having to retire, Setelin then made a smart move on Vlasity to sign on the second place finish leaving Vlasity to finish third.
Main event action in the IMCA Southern Sportmod division resulted in $-Cody Center out front for most of the race. Center could not hold off 5-James Webster who started last and rallied through the pack to fill victory lane. Center raced Webster to the line but fell short by a bumper.
Super Stock driver 85-Rob Cloclasure waited patiently for 41-George Fronsman to make a mistake but Fronsman was to smooth and took home the victory. Cloclasure did earn the second place payout with 02x-Larry Brigner placing third in the shootout.
Next up, five divisions of racing are on the card for Saturday July 31, 2010. Divisions running are the IMCA MODIFIEDS, IMCA Southern Sportmods, Super Stocks, Bombers and AMMA Winged Modified Midgets. Racing begins at 7:30pm; general admission tickets are $15, senior/military $13 and as always children 12-under are FREE. All access pit passes are $30 per person with no age restrictions and gates are open all day. BYOB in cans only and FREE camping is permitted (no hook-ups).

COX STEALS THE SHOW WITH FIVE TO GO IN MODIFIED COMPETITION;
MEANWHILE TOTAL SEAL SWDRA LATE MODELS PREPARE FOR RETURN
CSP Press Release Peoria, AZ July 12, 2010 --- Saturday proved to be a true Arizona summer night! The track slicked off creating a true contest that really tested the driver’s skills. A blistering sun beat down on ninety-five cars that participated in the event and an abnormal humid day made for challenging conditions.
The IMCA Modified division twenty-five lap feature saw twenty cars, six lead changes, had three cautions with the last one coming with five circuits to go. Bad boy 18-Terry Belcher Jr. worked his way through the field and relished an easy five-car lead heading into the late race caution. After the track returned to green flag action, cars began to shuffle creating a thriller right down to the checkers. Belcher looking for a little extra moved up on the cushion as 96-John Cox found traction through the middle groove and made a commanding pass and stole the show to finish first past the checkers.
After Cox captured his first modified division main event victory of the season, he celebrated his accomplishment with long time friend 18-Terry Belcher Jr. who finished second. Third place x04-Mike Strobel has had a skillful season, keep an eye on Strobel as he is capable of knocking down a victory. Fourth place and current track point’s leader 4tw-Tim Ward continues to string together solid runs. Ward is an accomplished young star in his second season. He has proven that last years success was no fluke and that he belongs in this division.
Rounding out the top five last Saturday was Canyon’s 2008 modified champion 09-Jay Foster followed by: (6) 20rt-Rick Thornton Jr; (7) 44-Jason Noll; (8.) 5m-Anthony Madrid; (9) 52-DJ Wood and (10) TC Taylon Center. Modified driver 78-Steve Stultz and 87-Cliffton Maggard earned their first heat race wins of the season while number 96-John Cox also won his heat race.
Bomber mania continued to produce a stellar field as point’s leader 28-Jim Skaggs began the night by winning heat one. Heat two went to 40-Grant Ballard and heat three to 68v-Joe Vlasity. The Bomber feature again was dominated by 28-Jim Skaggs who is putting together one of the most winning seasons on record by any single driver in this division. Skagg’s put himself in victory lane for the eighth time this season and has won eight out of ten of this season’s races.
Bomber fans observed as second place 96-Ron Neis crossed the line. Neis has been a consistent threat to Skagg’s coupled with third place finisher 68v-Joe Vlasity. Fourth place finisher a.k.a. “Tank” 99-Trenton Setelin had a good quality run followed by: (5) 2-Joe Peterson; (6) S-Bobby Neuman; (7) 14-Glen Heichler; (8.) 17-Kurt Kesslinger; (9) S-Bobby Neuman and (10) 18j-Howard Lindsey.
Club action began with Desert Dwarf Car members gave a custom built bicycle to 66-JJ Lemoine as he heads off on a mission. Prior to racing action, the gang also unified by saluting 50-John Mathers father with a memorial lap. Revisiting victory lane with his familiar face was 76-Brian Stehr, followed by 12-Pat Henesey; (3) 66-JJ Lemoine; (4) 05-Chad Stewart and (5) 33-Eric Johnson. The CSP staff wants to send out a heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the DDCC girls that raise money via 50/50 drawings, they donated all the proceeds to CSP staff member Chris Rasta who is on bed rest with a severe back injury.
The AMMA (modified midgets) raced with their wings on as 14-Dustin Cormany placed another win in his sachel. Cormany had a few switchback lead exchanges with a young man with a bright future and second place finisher 53-Tye Michoko. Finishing third was local star 11-Dylan “The Hit Man” Cappello.
Southwest Modlite teams raced with no top on allowing fans to witness the driver’s wheeling action as they passed the grandstands. Another young man with great racing depth crossed the line first in the twenty-five lap main event was 81b-Bud Grossenbacher followed by: (2) 55-Nick Gann: (3) 42 Andy Eatwell; (4) 41-Tony Martin and (5) 24 Mike Martin.
The last late model race produced a packed house at Canyon. Fans stood on their feet as the trio of Thornton, Williams and Parker raced past the white flag of the thirty-lap feature. On exit of turn four, Thornton tried for a run off of four down toward the bottom as Williams shot the top. Flagman Conrad Santacruz waved the dual checkers as Parker split the two through the middle to cross the line by half a car length for the win.
Upon entering into this coming Saturdays competition July 17, Arizona’s rookie late model star 20rt Ricky Thornton Jr. has the point lead in his belt. Thornton has also tallied up five wins this season. SWDRA’s all time most winning driver and series champion 8-Lonnie Parker Jr. looks to find victory lane again at the Peoria oval.

CANYON CROWD ON THEIR FEET FOR A LAST LAP TOTAL SEAL LATE MODEL FINALE
CSP Press Release Peoria, AZ June 27, 2010 --- Upon entering into Saturdays competition, Arizona’s rookie late model star 20rt Ricky Thornton Jr. has the point lead in his belt. Thornton has also tallied up five out of six wins this season. Needless to say all eyes were on this talented young man at Canyon Speedway Park. Thornton did not waist any time getting to the front of the pack in the Total Seal 30-lap late model main event.
The race produced only a few cautions allowing Thornton enough green lap action to pull away from the pack. The race would not have been a race without a challenge from 23-Brad Williams who shadowed Thornton as he manipulated his way through the field. Williams showed Thornton that he was there a few times and passed Thornton on lap-17. Lapped traffic then clogged Williams up, allowing Thornton to regain the lead and open up it about five lengths until a late race caution on lap-27.
With lapped traffic circling around to the rear of the 18-car super late model field, SWDRA’s alltime most winning driver and champion 8-Lonnie Parker Jr. found himself in third place with three laps to go. After Parker started last in the main event, third was quite an accomplishment on its own. But, the champ would have none of that.
A packed house at Canyon stood on their feet as the trio of Thornton, Williams and Parker raced past the white flag. On exit of turn four, Thornton tried for a run off of four down toward the bottom as Williams shot the top. Flagman Conrad Santacruz waved the dual checkers as Parker split the two through the middle to cross the line by half a car length for the win.
After one of the best late model finishes on record at Canyon, fired up fans got to see another spectacular finish in the Pure Stock division. Drivers 01-Ty Warner, 47-Darin Olney, 49-Brandon Parker and 33y-David Jones ran in a pack of their own up front. A feisty Warner led with the race coming down to the wire. With one to go, point leader 33y-David Jones made his move to the bottom of turn one under Warner. Upon exit of two, Jones found himself in a drag race with Warner through to the line. With Warner on his quarter panel, Jones extended his season point lead with the victory.
Bomber maniacs saw 64-David Romero and his co-pilot dominate the feature for his second win this season. Point leader 28-Jim Skaggs finished second in the main event followed by 68v-Joe Vlasity. Skaggs has had a ton of tension come his way after winning all but two (7 wins out of 9 races) heading into the Bomber main event this past Saturday. Only Jason Crowe who won on April third and Romero have beaten Skaggs this season. However, in victory lane Romero vowed to beat out point leader 28-Jim Skaggs when Bombers return July 10th.
Number 5-James Webster and team celebrated after he beat out the IMCA Southern Sportmod field. Also returning to the top spot on the podium in the Desert Dwarf Car division was 66-JJ Lemoine.
Next up, five divisions of racing are booked for Saturday July 10, 2010. Divisions running are the IMCA Modifieds, Bombers, Southwest Modlites, AMMA Winged Modified Midgets and Desert Dwarf Cars. Racing begins at 7:30pm; general admission tickets are $15, senior/military $13 and as always children 12-under are FREE. All access pit passes are $30 per person with no age restrictions and gates are open all day. BYOB in cans only and FREE camping is permitted (no hook-ups).
Aside of the great racing action, the CSP staff will continue with this seasons “Focus On Family” with FREE children give-a-ways and the kids co-pilot program.

CSP Press Release Peoria, AZ June 22, 2010 --- Three drivers lead the 25-lap IMCA modified feature but bad boy 18-Terry Belcher Jr. (266-pts) after taking over the main event on lap thirteen, never looked back. Belcher Jr. stood in victory lane a proud father as he and his daughter posed for the paparazzi.
Past track champ 14j-Jay Foster (263-pts) continues to pocket top two finishes as he nips at the point lead and shows that he is a serious modified contender. Foster may be quiet but he sits third in points but this local star has been a beast to beat on the track.
Team x04-Mike Strobel (237-pts) bagged the heat three win to start the night off right. Then backed it up with a third place main event finish. Strobel moved up to sixth in points after his solid performance.
Canyon’s current point leader 4tw-Tim Ward (283-pts) pinched off fourth place to hold a respectable lead. Rounding out the top five saw rookie TC-Taylon Center (240-pts). Center continues to put together good runs and has been impressive this season.
A sixth place finish helps 12-Guy Norton (261-pts) continue his claim to fourth in points. Dirt Track Depot owner/driver 96-John Cox lead early in the feature but after getting caught up in a caution, Cox raced back to finish seventh. The 16w-DJ Wood team again looked strong as Wood showed the fast line while racing up front. Wood was tough out front but his power plant popped retiring Wood to the pits for the evening.
Modified division points leader 4tw-Tim Ward (246pts & also known as the “Mesa Missile”) has a little cushion entering this weekends competition. Ward had knocked the main event feature win the last outing and looks to continue his mid season success.
The Pure Stock division produced a different winner complimented by z28-Ty Weidner. A furious 49-Brandon Parker finished second and third place honors were earned by 47-Darin Olney. Bomber Maniac’s cheered for 9-Paul O’Connor as he lead the feature but motor issues got the best of him expiring his night. Commander 28-Jim Skaggs again takes home the win but not without a challenge from the villain 68v-Joe Vlasity. The tank 99-Trenton Setelin grinded his way up to the front and finished third.
AMMA hit man 11-Dylan Cappello celebrated a back-to-back win and Super Stock veteran 57-Joe Sarginger beat out champion 19-Kenny Gill at the line.
There is an open practice for all divisions scheduled Wednesday with track time available from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Front grandstand entry is free and all access pit passes are $15 per person.

Free children give-a-ways and the kids co-pilot program will also accompany the program.
Modified division points leader 4tw-Tim Ward (246pts & also known as the “Mesa Missile”) has a little cushion entering this weekends competition. Ward had knocked the main event feature win the last outing and looks to continue his mid season success.
An entertaining 12-Guy Norton and an always fast 18-Terry Belcher Jr. share the second spot with 226 points each. Norton has been right there in main event action and will be scratching for his first main event victory this season. Belcher’s driving style thrills Canyon fans as he enjoyed wins in March and April this season.
Just outside the top three sits 2007 track champion 14j-Jay Foster with 224 points. Foster had also won a feature last month and has consistently finished up front. His team sits only two points out of second and looks to clean things up a bit this weekend. However 44-Jason Noll is also caught up in the mix with 218 points. Noll had a tremendous ’10 Winter Challenge series and has also knocked down a victory in March of this season.
Lurking around in the pack is another track champion and fan favorite 5m-Anthony Madrid with 208 points. Another young star milling around in the group is rookie TC-Taylon Center at 204 points. Center finds himself tied with 34dd-Bill Carron also with 204 points. Only 22-points separate TC and Carron from point leader Tim Ward. With eight point races to go, summer among us and the heat turned up, things are starting to get a bit interesting.
IMCA western region rookie of the year point contender 76-Scott Smith rides along with 201 track points. Smith has also shown his stability this season by putting together a string of top tens. The X04-Mike Strobel team has bagged 199 points and he sits in the ten spot. Strobel hopes to get a little luck to go his way this weekend so that he can tighten the gap.
Honorable mention goes out to 16w-DJ Wood at 185 points, in eleventh and having a superb season. Super late model sensation 20rt-Ricky Thornton Jr. has also seen success with his modified agenda. Thronton Jr. hangs on to twelfth with 184 points; coupled with main events win in April and May of this year.
Team 33y-David Jones boasts an expanded point lead for his first Pure Stock division track championship at Canyon. Bomber Mania points leader 28-Jim Skaggs returns wishing to continue to dominate the Bomber Maniacs in search of win number six. The Super Stock division saw 57-Joe Sarginger up front last weekend beating out a resilient Rob Colcasure and current point leader “Kenny Gill”. Club AMMA and 11-Dylan Capello return to action after the fifteen year old crossed the checkers number one the last race.
There are five divisions of racing this Saturday night featuring IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks, Bombers and AMMA Winged Modified Midgets. Racing begins at 7:30pm; general admission tickets are $15, senior/military $13 and as always children 12-under are FREE. All access pit passes are $30 per person with no age restrictions and gates are open all day. BYOB in cans only and FREE camping is permitted (no hook-ups).
